[Repost] NYCU DMT Establishes New Precision Informatics Track to Empower Medical Technologists’ Core Decision-Making

With a history spanning over 40 years, the Department of Biotechnology and Laboratory Science in Medicine (DMT) at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) serves as a cornerstone for cultivating medical laboratory talent in Taiwan. Standing at the intersection of a generational shift and rapid technological transformation, Department Chair Chih-Sheng Huang and Associate Professor Shih-Cheng Lu—both of whom have dedicated over 20 years of service to the department—now shoulder the critical mission of spearheading a “transformation and upgrade” in medical laboratory education.

Driven by a shared consensus reached within the department in 2024, DMT officially established two distinct academic tracks: the “Biotechnology and Laboratory Medicine Track” and the “Informatics and Precision Medicine Track.” This strategic restructuring integrates traditional laboratory testing, biotechnology, bioinformatics, big data analytics, and artificial intelligence in laboratory applications with comprehensive clinical training. Concurrently, the department has brought in interdisciplinary faculty to emphasize a new paradigm: the role of medical technologists has evolved far beyond merely “performing tests.” Instead, they are now forging a path toward core roles in data interpretation, quality management, the development of laboratory instruments and reagents, and clinical decision support.
